Stephen Taber Specialty Weeks Cruises

Each evening aboard the Stephen Taber includes wine pairings with dinner.

French Wine TastingWine Tasting Windjammer Cruises —
3-Day Sail June 24–27, 4-Day Sail August 20–24 and a 6-Day Sail September 17–23, 2017

Led by the charming and talented Jane Barrett Barnes, each evening aboard the Taber we will visit a different country, tasting and discussing that country's varietals and viticultural history. Meals will include paired wines, with Jane and our Chef working together to craft a menu to show off the wines perfectly.

Sailors take notes during Jane Barnes wine tasting classSince 1992, Jane Barrett Barnes has been sniffing, sipping and enjoying wines with top industry leaders. She has worked with the Four Seasons, Champagne Veuve Clicquot, the International Wine Center, restaurateur Joseph Bastianich, the American Institute of Wine and Food and most recently Paterno Wines International. No armchair connoisseur, Jane has visited the vineyards of Tuscany, Piedmont, Campania, Chile, Burgundy, the Rhone, Greece and the Napa Valley. She is passionate about the history, culture and enjoyment of wine and loves to share her knowledge and experience with others in a relaxed, fun setting. [back to top]

Guest comments: Wine Week

"This is our third trip on the Stephen Taber and each one has been terrific and different from the last. The wine tasting this year was fantastic. Jane's enthusiasm for her subject is infectious. May you always have as much fun as we did this year. By the way, this is the "perfect" vacation- rain, cold, sun, heat, whatever — it's still perfect." —Sue & Dave from Owings, MD

"This has been a great week! The wine tastings have been great! Jane arranged themes that covered a lot of ground with many, very high quality wines. The stories, the friendships and the ever perfect wit of Captain Noah made the days even more delightful." —Mark & Katherine from Seattle, WA

"Thank you so much for all you do to make it fun to be on the wonderful Stephen Taber — she's the best. The wine tasting week was soooo much fun. Jane's expertise was great....and the meals and good humor; just everything is so 'Taber'." —Bonnie & Bob from Fairview Park, OH

Charlie Nobles music on the BayThe 8th Annual Music Cruise and Gam — 4-Day Sail June 10–14, 2017
The 8th Annual Music Cruise and Gam
This has really become something. Noteworthy. Special. For one special cruise from June 10–14, the Taber becomes the only floating juke joint on the coast.

The cruise features the music of The Charlie Nobles; the official house/boat band of the music cruise. The band includes Tom Whitehead on guitar, Cajun accordion and vocals; Chicky Stoltz on snare and vocals; Jed Kriegel on upright bass; and Capt. Noah Barnes on harmonica and vocals. All are master musicians who play around the Northeast, yet converge annually to serve up some of the greatest Jazz, Blues, and Americana this side of the Merrimac River.

"This floating reunion is always the highlight of our sailing season," says Capt. Noah. "I've known these guys for decades, and have played with them through thick and thin. There is nothing like playing music with old friends."

Guests are treated to not only great music every night, but impromptu sets take place at various times during the day, though never intrusive. Guests can also take advantage of guitar instruction made available by the band.

As if it weren't enough, then comes the gam. An old merchant navy term, a gam is any gathering of ships for what seems like the purpose of good times. A raft-up of typically eight to ten tall ships takes place in some secluded cove for a night of music, food, and camaraderie. The Charlie Nobles lead this gam aboard the Taber, combining a majestic gathering of tall ships with one heck of a floating concert. And if you add great food, incredible views, and service above and beyond; you've got yourself something. Noteworthy. Special.

Watch Chef James build a bulliabaise
Gourmet Cruise with Guest Chef James Tranchemontagne — 4-Day Sail June 15–19, 2017
This trip is always such a blast that we've invited Chef James back to do it again! Previously of Portland's Café Uffa and now chef/owner of the highly regarded Westbrook gastro pub Frog and Turtle, Chef James brings his flair for delicious bistro fare and high-quality comfort food to the Taber. Chef James will be on hand to discuss techniques, inspirations, wood-stove cookery and his passion for house-made charcutarie. A previous year's highlight, watching him build a bouillabaisse: cooking show and history lesson, outstanding meal! (Book it now!)

"James is a wonder. Fabulous food as always. The Frog and Turtle is my first choice when I want good food in a comfortable atmosphere." —from a review on

The Great Schooner Race

41st Annual Great Schooner Race —
6-Day Sail July 2–8, 2017

Most of this week will be spent just like all of our other trips — sailing and relaxing around Penobscot Bay and a lobster bake on a deserted island. But come Race Day, the gloves come off as the Taber defends her trophy in our most thrilling event of the summer! Come be a part of North America's largest annual gathering of Tall Ships, and help us race for glory as more than two dozen windjammers gather for an exciting all-day race. The race will start in an Islesboro harbor and end in Rockland. Guests may participate in the race (or not). The post-race party will heat up in Rockland with bandstand dancing and an awards ceremony.

Lighthouses Cruise & Rockland Windjammer Parade —
6-Day Sail July 9–15, 2017

As with Race Week, most of this week will be spent sailing and relaxing around Penobscot Bay, with a lobster bake on a deserted island. We'll be cruising by as many lighthouses as we can manage, too. On the last full day of the week, the entire windjammer fleet participates in an afternoon Parade of Sail past the mile-long Rockland Breakwater, providing spectators with stunning, close-up views of Maine's fleet of Tall Ships.

This trip includes unique and priceless Maine experiences while sailing in company with Schooner Ladona:

"Fantastic DownEast cruise that absolutely went above expectations. Love to do this every year..."

Sailing in Stonington, Maine

Captain's Choice — 6-Day Sail August 6–12, 2017
This one's easy. Captain Noah's birthday is August 8th, so this week, you guessed it, we eat all his favorite things and sail to all his favorite places. And then we get to throw him in the harbor. A tradition as old as the sea, and not even the captain can avoid it.

Camden Schooner Celebration —
4-Day Sail August 29– September 2, 2017

The fleet gathers in picturesque Camden Harbor for festivities reminiscent of the days when hundreds of coastal schooners lined the waterfront. Festivities include a parade of sail, flag-raising ceremonies, live music, dancing and fireworks. This weekend trip will feature the Schooner Crew Talent Show — not to be missed — and a relaxing morning spent in beautiful Camden Harbor.

Photo and Lighthouse Cruise —
6-Day Sail September 3–9, 2017

We are proud to have as our special guest, award winning photographer John L. Shipman. John will be teaching informal classes on digital photography. We will also make a special effort to visit as many of Maine's beautiful lighthouses as possible.

WoodenBoat Sail-In —
6-Day Sail September 10–16, 2017

Our last and usually most spectacular gathering of the fleet (the wind generally makes for an exciting parade), the fleet gathers at the headquarters of WoodenBoat Magazine and Boatbuilding School. The event is a great celebration of America's schooners and includes an afternoon of refreshments, live music, facility tours and a world-class sunset at the far end of Eggemoggin Reach.

Fall Foliage Cruises — 4-Day Sails September 24–28, September 29–October 3 and October 5–9 and a 3-Day Sail October 10–13, 2017
For those of you who have never seen the fiery hills and islands of Maine from the water, you are in for a treat. The typical weather is crisp and cool, the breeze is strong and steady, and we have the whole bay to ourselves. Coastal hardwoods begin to show in late September, and by our last cruise, the hillsides are crimson, yellow, and orange — truly a sight to behold.
