The schooner Stephen Taber is fully booked this summer for its cruises along the coast of Maine. But its captain says he’s had to raise prices to keep up with inflation, and members of his crew find themselves living aboard the ship because of high housing costs. NBC News' Christine Romans reports.
“I had been excited for this trip. I love being on the water. And the idea of being transported by the wind, without machinery, nor engines — and for what I decided to also be without a cellphone — felt like stepping back in time.”
“Tour groups invade quaint northeastern towns in private cars, tour buses and tall ships, all searching for the burst of color that means fall has truly arrived. Yes, leaf peeping is even available from historic ships with tall masts, like the schooner Stephen Taber.”
“I have never had more fun or felt more relaxed and safe, despite these COVID-19 days.”
“Ask where we’re going and you’re missing the point. We’ve already arrived.”
“Cocktail Hour each day was over-the-top wonderful. Each evening brought savory treats, mature cheeses, and a wonderful array of wines to complement each bite.”
“‘I'm eternally grateful that the first time I came sailing, I chose this boat. I found a home.’”
“There are plenty of different cruise ships, yachts, and schooners out there, but none are quite like the Stephen Taber. This is a truly historic vessel that was actually sailing back in the 19th century.”
“This is the kind of experience I dreamed about when I first stepped foot in Maine about ten years ago.”
"In an era ruled by technology, windjamming is an aberration, an unscripted adventure. Wind and tide set the pace and itinerary; sunrise and sunset schedule the day."
If you’re a foodie, sailing on the Stephen Taber is a must.
Captain Noah thoroughly embraces the concept of environmental stewardship and strictly adheres to the “Leave-No-Trace” principle.
Suddenly, a post-breakfast race is on and a rush of excitement rises. A six-pack of Dogfish Head beer will be the spoils for the captain of the first schooner to reach Owls Head Light back at Rockland harbor. Captain Noah has a gleam in his eye. We’re off.
"Here are our five regional picks for the best extreme retreats."
"The checkered tablecloth was laid out and so were the wines Jane had carefully selected for us. Honestly, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a wine tasting aboard a schooner, but Jane amazed us all."
"...Rockland has proudly preserved its maritime heritage while blossoming into an unassuming culinary starlet of northern New England, with a smattering of cultural offerings thrown in for good measure...."
"Not only did our trip exceed all our expectations, it still ranks as one of the most enjoyable vacations we have ever experienced!
"Contrary to many charter captains, Noah never tires of going the extra mile, of raising the extra sail, to find the best view of the sunset, the prettiest secluded cove or the most enchanting island to explore."
